Originally reviewed for Bookaholic Confessions In Dating the Alphabet we follow restaurant manager Ramona Rawlings on her quest for true love. As soon as I read the synopsis for Dating the Alphabet I was sold on this book. It sounded great and I loved the idea. The restaurant is managed by Ramona and the staff who work there all dress up as well known characters. So you might have Cinderella bringing you your lunch, or Tarzan taking your drinks order complete with loin cloth or even Fat Elvis crooning away whilst you munch on your dinner.
This really does make for hilarious reading at times. You quickly get used to it but occasionally it can catch you off guard in the middle of the story and it always made me chuckle. I loved the rapport between everyone who worked at the restaurant too. I thought it was sweet how much Ramona cared about her colleagues and I was so happy with the way that things turned out for them all. On the whole Ramona is a really likeable character, but she did sometimes do things that frustrated me just that little bit too much and she did come across as self-centred at points.

It has a grammatical structure all its own, and is written in an alphabet based on Hebrew characters. Scholars and universities classify Yiddish as a Germanic language, though some have questioned that classification. They had their own international language known as Ladino or Judesmo, which is a hybrid of medieval Spanish and Hebrew in much the same way that Yiddish combines German and Hebrew.

Melissa 10 comments Often considered one of the more difficult languages to master thanks to the incredible amount of inconsistencies in the language, it should come as no surprise that the development of the modern English alphabet involved several languages, hundreds of years and a variety of conquers, missionaries and scholars. Origins of Alphabetic Writing Dating back nearly four thousand years, early alphabetic writing, as opposed to other early forms of writing like cuneiform which employed the use of different wedge shapes or hieroglyphics which primarily used pictographic symbols , relied on simple lines to represent spoken sounds.
Scholars attribute its origin to a little known Proto-Sinatic , Semitic form of writing developed in Egypt between and BC. Building on this ancient foundation, the first widely used alphabet was developed by the Phoenicians about seven hundred years later. The Greeks built on the Phoenician alphabet by adding vowels sometime around BC. Both were used throughout the Middle Ages, although they were considered a single letter until quite recently. With ties to Scandinavia and other North Seas cultures, ancient Anglo-Saxon writing, called futhorc , was a runic language.
Flexible, new runes were routinely added such that, although it first appeared in England with 26 characters, by the time of its demise by the 11th century AD , it had In the seventh century AD, the Latin alphabet introduced by Christian missionaries had begun to take hold.
The Croats using the Glagolitic alphabet were the only nation in Europe who was given a special permission by Pope Innocent IV in to use their own language and this script in liturgy. More precisely, this permission had formally been given to the bishop Philip of Senj. However, special care accorded by the Vatican to the Glagolitic liturgy in subsequent centuries even by publishing several Glagolitic missals in Rome , shows that this privilege applied to all Croatian lands using the Glagolitic liturgy, mostly along the coast.

Even a quick and cursory glance at its inventory of signs makes it very apparent of this script’s Egyptian origin. Originally it was thought that at round BCE, Sinai was conquered by Egypt, and the local West-Semitic population were influenced by Egyptian culture and adopted a small number of hieroglyphic signs about 30 to write their own language.
However, recent discoveries in Egypt itself have compounded this scenario. Inscriptions dating to BCE written in what appears to be Proto-Sinaitic were found in Upper Egypt, and nearby Egyptian texts speak of the presence of Semitic-speaking people living in Egypt. No matter where and when the adoption of Egyptian signs onto a Semitic language occurred, the process of adoption is quite interesting.
Egyptian hieroglyphs already have phonetic signs in addition to logograms , but the Sinaitic people did not adopt these phonetic signs.

Use in the Armed Forces You may have noticed that many english letters sound similar. For most of us, this sort of error might cause a mislabeled package shipment or a misspelled dinner invitation. However, for a soldier or fighter pilot, a misheard command or radio signal can mean life or death. Therefore, radio operators in the armed services often rely on the military alphabet when sending codes or relaying important information.
